A brief outline of the history of the Palmer-Shorey families. I give refer-
ences for each generation if I have any. Some information I have not
had a chance to check.
Starting with Clyde E. Palmer and Bernice E. Shorey working back.
Palmer-a pilgrim, so called from the Palm branches which he constantly
carried as a pledge of his having been to the Holy Land.

He was an auto mechanic in New York City in early 1900s. Returned to Me.
1915 and became a farmer. Moved to Wales 1916. Served on the board of
selectmen for several years. Gave the town the land on which Wales central
School is located. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. She was a school
teacher in Whitefield before her marriage. She enjoyed sewing making much of
the clothing for her children and made many Quilts.

helped in building the Whitefield Grange Hall and was a granger for many
years in Whitefield and Wales. He enjoyed reading until his eyesight failed.
He did much gardening in his later years. He moved to Wales with his son.

house clean once every week. He was in King Phillip's War. His father-in-law
John Johnson was ensign, later Capt. of the Co.

1639. He had an 1 1/2 acre house lot on Bradford St. 1643.

Benjamin Glidden was head of family residing in Newcastle, Me. 1790. Me.
census 1790 p. 41. He moved from Newcastle to New Milford now Alma where he
resided in 1801.
Revolutionary record: He appears as Pvt. in Capt. Archibald McAllister's
Co. of Col. Wm. Jones Regt. and his payroll was dated at Newcastle Sept. 15,
1777 (Mass. Rev. War Rolls 36:173). He also appears in the same Co. of Col.
Samuel McCobb's Regt. from July 11 to Sept. 24, 1779 in the expedition
against Major Bagaduce.

He was a farmer living in Stratham, N. H. 1742, Exeter, N. H. 1749,
Damariscotta, Ballstown, Me. He petitioned as a "Cape Briton Man" Oct. 26,
1748 which shows that he was a soldier at Louisberg 1745. He also appears
as Lt. in Capt. Wm. Miller's Train Band on the East side of Damariscotta
River and was stationed at Pemaquid, Me. Apr. 6, 1757. This service was in
the French and Indian War on the coast of Me. (Mass. Archives 95 p. 254).
He had a farm at the head of Damariscotta River 1752. Lived at Walpole settle-
ment 1768; from 1768 to 1775 he lived on the Sheepscott River and apparently
was one of the proprietors of Ballstown. The Town records of Rowley, Mass.
call him Capt. Charles Glidden of Sheepscott, Me. in reporting his death there
in 1776. A Revolutionary soldier.

Sept. 1668. License for public house 1686. Served during King Phillip's War
Aug. 31 to Sept. 28, 1696.

out to him in Falmouth Co. York. At this period he served in French and Indian
Wars; served 1 year, 2 months total between 1757 and 1761. Moved his family
to Pownalboro, Me. about 1761 and soon became known as a landowner, mill owner,
and manufacturer of lumber. With his brother Job had a sawmill on west bank
of river. Revolutionary War record: Civil service Me.

towards Major Dennison's allowance 1648. Averill- a corruption of Haverhill
a town in Suffolk England named for Dutch 'Hyver' and Teutonic 'Haber' oats
and hill -'the hill sown with oats.'

Bought land 1659, Oath of Allegiance Nov. 7, 16771 His name appeared in
early records as 'Sinkler.' Sinclair, St. Clair, Sinkler- a corruption of
St. Clair and that from St. Clara from the Latin 'cearus' pure, renowned,
illustrious. The family is traced back to Rogenwald, Earle of Maerle of
Norway, a favorite of King Harold 888 AD. His son Rollo became first Duke
of Normandy by marrying 912, the daughter of 'Charles the Simple' of France;
received the St. Clair castle in the province of Normandy. The surname St.
Clair was adopted by his great grandson who was uncle to William the Conqueror
and his three sons were at the battle of Hastings. William his youngest son
known as 'the Seemly St. Clair' disagreed with his uncle and formed an alliance
with Malcom 3 of Scotland and was defeated at the battle of Tweed and lost
his life. He was the ancestor of the American Family of St. Clair.

Petitioned for Liberty to plant and build at Whitehead Neck. Moved to Hull,
Mass. proprietor 1657, town officer 1669. Benson- Ben's son, the son of
Benjamin. This large and ancient family identified with Mashem England as
early as 1300.

The Bartletts of America can trace back to Adam Bartlett who came to England
from Normandy in 1066, squire to Brian Bartlett in the battle of Hastings of
that year under William the Conqueror. Both received land grants in England.
The manor house at Stopham, West Sussey near the town of Pulboro in England
is still owned by Bartletts.

The origin of the name Illathera, which is still preserved in the Barker
family involves a simple story of romantic interest. Capt. Howland was
wrecked on Eleuthera, one of the Bahama Islands and did not succeed in
reaching home for 3 years. He was given up for lost by all except his wife.
Soon after he left home a little girl was born and the mother looked to him
to name the child on his return. He called her Illathera for the island which
had been his home. A combination of Isle and Eluethera.

to keep an Inn in Marshfield to retail wine, which he canceled 1666. Granted
9 1/2 acres of meadow at Robinson's Creek, North River, Duxbury.
Robert and brother John were early adventurers in Plymouth, Mass. 1628-1630.
They went inland and established a trading post at what is now Pembroke, Mass.

He was in Plymouth Colony Mar. 7, 1636/7. Received 10 acres of land on Duxbury
side between the lands of Wm. Tubs on North and Experience Mitchell on South; the
sea in West and Blew Fish River in East. Peabody--the name is said to have
originated in the year 61 during the reign of Nero. Queen Boadicia was located
at Icena, Britain. She opposed the Romans in their invasion of the country and
with her son Boadie, took refuge in the craggy heights of Wales. Boadie among
the Britons signifies a man or great man and Pea signifies a large hill. A
mountain from which Boadie came to be called Peabodie or the mountain man and
which became the name of the tribe.
